I started with the same goal as many avid Bass Anglers, and that is to fish and Win Bass Tournaments, and potentially set a New State or World Black Bass Record.
I haven't set a new world record yet! But I did win the Big Bass Payout at Bill Luke Big Bass Days, Lake Pleasant, AZ, arguably the toughest bass fishery in the United States, against 500 other Bass Anglers, with my 6" Rattlin Larry the Lizard, so I guess I maybe half way there. I believe that at least one of these baits in the "Rattlin Series" if not all of them, the ability to catch the New World Record Black Bass, Small-Mouth Bass, or Spotted Bass, on any given day.
I had no idea Bass Fishing would lead me on this path, all I knew is that I loved Bass Fishing, and that was enough for me.
I guess it all started when a few friends invited me to a well known bass fishing lake in Missouri, down in the Ozarks. I had seen bass fishing on T.V. and it looked great. I had started fishing when I was knee high to a grasshopper, but that was mostly for trout, and toothie critters ( Northern Pike ) in the rivers and lakes of Colorado. But this was Missouri, and this was Bass Country Now.
I showed up rigged up with 2 light line spinning rods, some Eagle Claw Hooks, Night Crawlers, and a few Jakes Lures, in line spinning metal baits, that work well on trout , but I had caught bass on those before, and just figured I would be able to do the same here.
And so, I got to the lake, and pulled out my arsenal, and my friends just laughed at me. "They said, what are you going to catch with that? A blue gill, a catfish? Man, we're going bass fishing!" And they just kept on laughing.
Mean while they each pulled out what must have been 10 Rods each, with things I had never even seen before tied on.
Long story short, my feelings was hurt, so I left, no I didn't even make one cast after driving 2 hours to the lake. And when I got home, I immediately called my father, who was the youngest ever Fish & Game Commissioner in the State of Colorado, and I asked him, because he always caught big fish, no matter what species they be; And I said, how did you catch all those big bass when I was a kid?
He replied; well, just get you a Carolina rigged lizard!
I said; What the hell is that?
He replied; " You don't know what a Carolina rigged lizard is?"
He replied; " Well get a book!" And then he hug-up on me!
And that's how this all started!
